Hyperfocus
That thing where you vanish into a task for six hours when it grabs you. Pointed at the right work, it’s a serious advantage.
Why it works
Hyperfocus shows up more often in ADHD brains and can outproduce normal focused work by a wide margin. The catch is that hyperfocus picks the target, not you. So most of the work is loading the environment so it lands on something useful when it shows up.
Benefits
- Big output on work that genuinely interests you
- Deep, often original work in your field
- A real source of professional advantage
Common obstacles
- Hyperfocus on the wrong thing (Wikipedia rabbit hole at 2am)
- Forgetting to eat, drink, or move during a session
- A crash afterwards with nothing planned for recovery
Tips to try
- Front-load your day with the work you want hyperfocus to find
- Hard alarms for water, food, and movement during long sessions
- Plan the recovery — light task or rest — after a deep block
- Notice your peak hours and protect them
